21 Sep Liquids in hand luggage: what can you carry?…..
Restricted liquids on flights from UK airports
There are restrictions on the amount of liquids you can carry in your hand luggage. When UK airports talk about ‘liquids’, they mean:
- All drinks: including water
- Liquid or semi-liquid foods: including soup, jam, honey and syrups
- Cosmetics and toiletries: including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara and lip gloss
- Sprays: including shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants
- Pastes: including toothpaste
- Gels: including hair and shower gel
- Contact lens solution: including other solutions and items of similar consistency
If you want to take these liquids in your hand luggage, you need to make sure of a few things:
- 100ml: your liquids must not exceed 100ml.
- Clear bag: all your 100ml containers should fit comfortably in a clear, sealed plastic bag that’s no bigger than 20cm x 20cm.
- Show security: you must take your bag out at the airport security point.
Remember: The rules around what liquids you can take in your hand luggage are changing. Read below to learn about the new rules and check with the airport before you travel.
The 100ml liquid rule is changing from June 2024
What to expect and when
The rules around taking liquids and electrical devices through UK airport security are changing. Passengers won’t need to remove liquids from their hand baggage and the 100ml liquid limit will be extended to 2 litres.
Many airports have already adopted these new rules. However, other airports have been given an extension beyond the initial June 2024 deadline.

Exemptions to the hand luggage rules
Duty-free liquids: hand luggage rules
You can bring any liquids purchased at the airport or on the plane in your carry-on luggage, even if they exceed the 100ml limit. Remember you can’t drink anything you bought at duty free during the flight.
Keep in mind: Don’t get carried away in duty-free on your way out. You could end up having to leave pricey items behind if you can’t bring them in your hand luggage on the return flight.
Medication: hand luggage rules
You can bring essential medicines or creams in your hand luggage, even if they exceed 100ml. You’ll just need a doctor’s letter or a copy of your prescription. The airport staff will ask to see the letter and they might need to open the containers to screen the liquids.
Watch out: Make sure you leave plenty of time for your doctor to write a note and be prepared to pay an admin fee.
Baby food and milk: hand luggage rules
As long as your baby is with you, you can bring as much baby milk, sterilised water, and food as you need, even if it exceeds 100ml. You can carry up to 2 litres of breast milk in your hand luggage, even if you’re not travelling with a baby. However, you can’t carry frozen breast milk.
Good to know: Security staff may ask you to taste your baby’s water or milk.
